Facial Rejuvenation at Denver's Altitude

06/22/20 | 3 MIN READ

Life in Colorado’s arid climate and mile-high elevation can pose unique challenges for proper skincare. At Raval Facial Aesthetics, we are often asked if these factors have any effect on the outcome of facial rejuvenation procedures. And while that’s a great thing to consider, the impacts of our climate and altitude have more to do with sun exposure and dry skin. Let’s find out what you can do to maintain a healthy, youthful face at home in the Mile High City. We’ll also talk about some easy and affordable treatments you can have done right in our office.

Apply Sunscreen - Always!

Our higher elevation means that the air is thinner and that UV rays from the sun are particularly intense. One way to combat the effects of harsh sunshine is to always, always, ALWAYS wear sunscreen. Even on cloudy days and even in the winter. And when you’re enjoying all of the amazing outdoor activities that our beautiful state has to offer, wear even more sunscreen. Harmful UVA and UVB rays reflect off of that lake water and the powdery snow. Sun exposure without proper protection might be your worst enemy - it will prematurely age your skin and can cause much more serious issues like skin cancer. So, did you hear us tell you to wear sunscreen?

Colorado’s Climate Requires the Right Moisturizer

One of the best things about Colorado is that we get to see each season in all its glory. We get the super hot summer days, the blustery fall evenings, the frigid and stormy winters, and the glorious springtime rain. It’s a great place to live, but it means taking extra care to moisturize your skin through all the shifting weather. The arid climate basically robs our skin of moisture. Dehydrated skin doesn’t function properly, and that can lead to clogged pores, eczema acne, inflammation, fine lines and wrinkles.

To help maintain hydration and proper pH levels, use skincare products that contain glycolic acid. You can use mild scrubs as part of your facial care regimen to keep your skin looking healthy and smooth, but avoid alkaline soaps that can further dry out your skin. Exfoliate only about one or twice a week so that your skin has some time to produce new cells, giving you that vibrant glow you’re after.

Not sure which skin care products are best for your face? Have a look at RavalRX. This is our own line of cleansers, gentle peels, serums and moisturizing creams that use clinically-proven ingredients in formulas based on Dr. Raval’s medical experience and insights. Taking the best possible care of your skin every day will help your face retain its natural, youthful appearance for as long as possible.

Hydrate Your Body Too

It may seem a little disconnected to say that drinking plenty of water in our dry climate will help your skin look healthier - but it’s true! Proper hydration keeps skin plump and improves its elasticity. It also increases blood flow to the skin, which aids in healing if you experience any cracked skin as a result of the dry, windy weather. Drinking lots of water throughout the day will have a positive impact on your overall health, so try and keep a water bottle near you at all times to remind you of the importance. Drink up, friends!

Professional Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

It seems like a lot of work to keep your skin looking fresh, young, and healthy. If you’re simply overwhelmed by a detailed skincare regimen, or if you think it’s time to try out a more serious approach, consider a few options. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, and HydrafacialMD can all help you bump up or kickstart your skincare. These non- and minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments are quick and easy and can really help maintain beautifully smooth skin in our climate and elevation. The aesthetic changes you can achieve from these treatments depend on which procedure you choose and your individual skin. Even the gentlest of treatments can leave your skin a bit tender for a short period of time. Harsher procedures such as deep chemical peels can require days or even weeks of recovery time. This is the same regardless of where you live - the altitude and climate have no direct impact on results or recovery.

What does impact results and recovery is how you manage your skin after one of these treatments. At any altitude and in any climate, it is essential to carefully follow your post-procedure instructions. These recommendations are designed to speed recovery and protect your newly-refreshed skin, ensuring optimal results. If you skimp on your recommended post-procedure regimen, or use the wrong products on your skin, your face will be more vulnerable to the elements.
