Platelet-rich fibrin matrix sounds exotic, doesn’t it? But, in fact, it is a healing agent that comes from your own body. Thanks to advanced technology, we are able to collect and isolate blood platelets that contain growth factors, then use them to stimulate and speed healing in specifically-targeted areas.
You may have heard of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix (or simply, PRFM) is a “turbo-charged” version of PRP, so it can help produce better, faster results. Here at Raval, we use PRFM as a stand-alone treatment and also as an enhancer for certain procedures.
PRFM Q & A
What is PRFM?
Platelet-rich fibrin matrix is a concentration of platelets – the component of blood that triggers healing by delivering growth factors to wounds. The growth factors promote production of new cells and renewed blood flow.
PRFM is produced one treatment at a time, as needed. A small blood sample is taken, then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red and white blood cells. The result is platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, which can also be used for healing. To create PRFM, a small amount of calcium chloride is added to the PRP, causing a chemical reaction that converts fibrinogen into a stronger fibrin matrix.
What are the benefits of PRFM?
Platelet-rich fibrin matrix is more stable than platelet-rich plasma, which enables it to last longer. Whereas PRP is effective for only about one day, PRFM works to promote healing for as long as a week.
It takes just a few minutes to produce PRFM, and it must be used when fresh, so it is created as needed at the beginning of each treatment appointment.
What does treatment involve?
PRFM may be used to enhance certain skin treatments. PRFM may also be delivered via injection directly to the target area. The injection may feel a bit like a bee sting, but we apply a numbing agent first, to minimize discomfort.
PRFM is a catalyst, not a permanent solution, so multiple treatments are required. We recommend one session per month for three months, then renewal treatments every three to six months, depending on the skin condition being treated.
What is the downtime?
You can go back to work or resume other normal activities right away after PRFM treatment.
What are the risks?
Because PRFM is produced from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. There is minimal risk of contamination because the substance is produced in-office at the time of treatment. As with any injection, some patients may experience slight, temporary redness or bruising at the injection site.
How we Use PRFM
Here at Raval Facial Aesthetics, we use platelet-rich fibrin matrix plasma in four ways:
Stimulate hair regrowth
For men and women with thinning hair, PRFM injections help rejuvenate dying hair follicles. The result is hair that is thicker and denser – and darker if you have naturally dark hair but are going gray. PRFM is not a solution for total baldness, but it can be used to combat age-related thinning over the entire scalp or in specifically targeted areas.
Reduce the appearance of acne scars
Although dermal fillers are sometimes used to help improve acne scars, achieving desired results can be a challenge. PRFM is proving to be a better option because it stimulates growth of new skin cells.
Reduce under-eye discoloration
As we age, many people develop hollows and dark circles under their eyes. PRFM is an effective treatment to reduce darkness. It also adds some volume, which helps smooth hollows and minimize very fine wrinkles, restoring a more youthful appearance to the eyes.
Augment microneedling and other skin procedures
PRP and PRFM may augment the results of many skin procedures. We use microneedling to address a variety of skin conditions, primarily to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles as well as acne and other scars. We have found that applying PRFM to the treatment area during the procedure can enhance results beyond what microneedling can produce on its own. You may have this type of procedure referred to as a “vampire facial,” because PRFM us produced from your own blood. Additionally, other ablative and non-ablative procedures may have enhance results with the use of PRP and PRFM.
