What Is Chemabrasion?

The term chemabrasion refers to a two-in-one facial skin resurfacing technique. In a single session, the patient first receives a microdermabrasion treatment, then a light or moderate chemical peel. This combination procedure enhances the benefits of each treatment type, compared to experiencing them separately.

What Are the Benefits?

Chemabrasion is individually tailored to each patient. It can be used on the face, neck, chest or back, to minimize skin imperfections such as:

  • Sun damage
  • Freckles or age spots
  • Facial wrinkles (even deep wrinkles)
  • Acne or other types of facial scars
  • Large pores

The procedure can treat the entire face, or it can target specific problem areas such as the cheeks, smoker’s lines around the mouth, or crow’s feet. Chemabrasion is also used to treat pre-cancerous lesions. Studies show patients may see as much as 50% visible improvement in acne scars and up to 70% or 80% reduction in visible wrinkles. Chemabrasion can also help balance dry or oily skin.

How It Works

The chemabrasion process is more aggressive than microdermabrasion performed alone. It stimulates the skin’s natural production of new collagen and elastin by creating controlled-depth injury to the surface. The result is tighter, smoother skin that continues to improve over time. Chemabrasion patients usually receive light sedation and local anesthesia, although sometimes intravenous sedation is used to ensure maximum comfort.

Is Chemabrasion Right for Me?

It is important to note that this procedure may not be recommended for some patients. This is because both microdermabrasion and chemical peels can sometimes cause temporary, or even permanent, hyperpigmentation in people with certain skin types. The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for this treatment is to schedule a consultation with our team.
