Are you tired of looking exhausted, or older than your age, thanks to dark hollows under your eyes? Platelet-rich fibrin matrix, or PRFM, may be the treatment for you. Here at Raval Facial Aesthetics, we like PRFM. One of the ways we use it is with lower eye injections to help reduce under eye discoloration and fine wrinkles.
What causes dark circles?
The delicate skin under our eyes gets thinner as we age, so the bluish veins and reddish muscle underneath become more visible. We also lose volume in our face as we age, causing the under eye area to appear sunken in many people and causing those pesky wrinkles to appear. Sun, allergies, asthma, smoking, and sometimes even sinus problems can heighten their appearance.
You can develop dark hollows no matter what your skin type. Depending on your ethnic background, you’re likely to have darker skin under your eyes at any age, simply because of your genetics.
How PRFM works
Platelet-rich fibrin matrix is not new, but it is rapidly gaining notoriety for its value in boosting the effectiveness of certain skin rejuvenation procedures. It is platelet-rich plasma (PRP), with an added boost – turbo-charged, you might say.
PRP is a concentration of your body’s own platelets, the blood component that contains growth factors which trigger healing by stimulating production of collagen and new blood flow. We obtain PRP by drawing a small sample of your blood, then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma. We then add calcium, which transforms the plasma into a more stable matrix.
This process takes just a few minutes, then the PRFM is ready to use. The fibrin matrix allows active growth factors to last up to a week – much longer than PRP, which generally lasts for about a day.
How we use PRFM to treat the lower eye area
Here at Raval Facial Aesthetics, we found a dual procedure that combines PRFM and a dermal filler works well to reduce dark circles and fine wrinkles under the eyes. PRFM reduces discoloration, and the filler adds volume to smooth the wrinkle grooves. We inject PRFM just like filler. PRFM is much thinner than filler, so it goes in even more easily.
There is some initial appearance of fullness, or puffiness, but that diffuses away. You have to give the growth factors time to do their job, but you should start seeing improvement in dark areas within three or four weeks. We usually recommend three initial PRFM treatments one month apart, then refresher treatments every three to six months.
PRFM treatments are minimally invasive, fast, and effective. If you’re ready for a lighter, brighter look around your eyes, we recommend PRFM lower eye injections.
