Artefill®, the ever-after filler, smoothes away lines and deep wrinkles permanently

Denver, CO — Used in Europe for more than six decades and approved by the FDA, Dr. Jeffrey Raval is now offering Artefill injections in his Cherry Creek North practice. Besides being the first permanent filler used to smooth away deep creases between the brows and around the mouth, taking years off of one’s appearance, Artefill has shown great promise for patients with HIV lipatrophy. The results are immediate and improve over the weeks and months to follow.

This is a great step forward for the patient with HIV, explains Jeffrey Raval, MD, FACS, owner of Raval Facial Aesthetics and Rocky Mountain Laser Aesthetics in Cherry Creek North, a posh urban shopping district in Denver, CO. “Until Artefill, patients had to return for new injections approximately every six months. Not so with Artefill.”

The Wall Street Journal was first to report in 2006 that Artefill had been approved for use in the United States. Used in Europe for more than six decades, Artefill is not reabsorbed by the body unlike other injectable fillers that are in the months following treatment. The clear gel contains miscrospheres that provide permanent and lasting support, keeping the skin tissue fresh, plumb and healthy looking.

Other fillers like Restylane®, Juvederm™, Radiesse® or Sculptra™ are reabsorbed by the body requiring frequent repeat injections. Unlike these other injectable fillers, Artefill has miscrospheres that provide permanent and lasting support.

Artefill is not absorbed by the body, resulting in the permanent solution of a younger looking you. Plus, the results of injections of Artefill last 18 months and longer, triple and quadruple the time other injectables begin to fade away, being reabsorbed by the body.

Artefill contains PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) microspheres and purified bovine collagen gel with an anesthetic. PMMA is one of the most widely used substances in medical implants with a proven safety record for over 60 years. After an Artefill injection the microspheres that are suspended in the collagen become part of the patient's own tissue as the collagen is resorbed, filling in the wrinkle for enduring correction. The microspheres in Artefill provide permanent support and the production of collagen continues to improve over several months. Depending on the depth of their wrinkles and the amount of Artefill used with each treatment, most people get the results they want with one or two treatments.

Formerly called Artecoll, Artefill contains small plastic-like beads within a collagen carrier. The collagen dissipates over time but the small beads are permanent. Produced in San Diego, California by Artes Medical, Inc., Artefill was tested in 251 subjects injected into the deep wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabella), the marionette lines from the nose to mouth (the nasolabial fold) and the corner of the mouth lines. Another test group was injected with Zyplast, ordinary collagen) and at the end of six months, 86.7 of the group injected with Artecoll showed augmentation of the loose skin, compared to those who received collagen.

Another follow-up study scheduled for five years was stipulated by the FDA.

The product name change occurred when the bead size was improved by the maker. PMMA has been commonly used in the medical field since 1945 in dental prostheses, hip implants, bone cement, inter-ocular lenses, repair material for craniofacial surgery and other medical devices. PMMA's biocompatibility has been positively discussed in many scientific articles and in all case studies Artecoll has shown a high degree of safety and an extremely low complication rate.
